The Grass Whisperer With a Mouthful of the Good stuff

Here’s Troy!

Troy Bishopp, affectionately known as “The Grass Whisperer”, is a 32 year well-seasoned grass farmer, a grasslands advocate, and a voice for grassfed livestock producers to the media, consumers, restaurateurs and policy-makers. Troy owns and manages Bishopp Family Farm in Deansboro, NY with his understanding wife, daughters and parents. Their certified organic, 100% grass-fed, custom grazing operation raises dairy heifers, grass-finished beef and backgrounds feeder cattle on 180 acres of owned and leased cool season pastures in the Mohawk Valley.

When not moving cattle, he works with farmers at the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Upper Susquehanna Coalition as their NY regional grazing specialist. The Whisperer is also a free-lance writer for a variety of local and national publications, an award winning photographer and speaks about pasture-based systems throughout the Northeast.

Bishopp Family Farm is a distinguished NYS Agriculture Society’s Century Farm Award recipient for continuous operation since 1890 and boasts 6 generations of farming. Troy is an honoree of the Pioneer Grazier’s Award by the New York Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative, and has received numerous media awards from The New York State Ag Society and the New York Conservation Committee as well as Toastmaster speaker awards.

Troy is a life-long learner, lingerer and skeptic at times.  He brings reality to the stage and is not afraid to get alittle dirty (hits the bullshit button if it warrants).  He takes advantage of new knowledge, experiments and uses past experience to bring a holistic approach to grazing planning and implementation.  Instead of thinking in terms of grasslands or grazing as a singular thing, he helps farmers chart a course that pays attention to their personal and environmental goals as well as their profits.  Visit his Grazing Help and Speaking & Workshops pages to find out more about what Troy brings to the table.

Talking About Grass

Advocating for raising livestock on pasture
As the Whisperer, Troy routinely asks folks “Do you know how much grass is in the beef/lamb/goat you buy?”.

Specializing in Green

A Grazier Harvesting Sunshine
Troy owns and manages Bishopp Family Farm in Deansboro, NY with his understanding wife, daughters and parents. Their certified organic custom grazing operation raises dairy heifers, grass-finished beef and backgrounds feeder cattle on 180 acres of owned and leased organic native pastures.
Accomplished Communicator
As an advocate for raising livestock on pasture, the GrassWhisperer  realized that helping others be successful and profitable required more than just technical knowledge.  To reach out, he’d need the speaking and writing skills to communicate with his fellow farmers and ranchers, and the public.  Investing four years in his local Toastmasters chapter, and one year as it’s president, makes him capable of touching his audience whether they’re farmers and ranchers, the media or legislators.  He’s used those same skills as he writes for agricultural newsletters. newspapers and magazines.
Grazing Charts for the World
Troy knows that being able to plan ahead ensures that stock have enough to eat, and the farmer or rancher has fewer worries.  With this in mind, he’s spent the last few years modifying grazing charts.  With the help of local farmers and a holistic, planned grazing NESARE Professional Development project, he’s created something that can work for anyone anywhere.  Now he’s focused on showing his fellow producers how to use these charts.  His workshops are popular with the Vermont Grass Farmer’s Association, PASA Pennsylvania Certified Organic, NOFANY, The Rodale Institute, local grazing groups and Conservation Districts.
The Highest Accomplishment
Troy has been honored by the New York Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative with the Pioneer Grazier’s Award, and has received numerous media awards, and Toastmaster contest awards.  He’s also tickled that beef custom grazed on the farm has been served at President Obama’s inaugural dinners, at restaurants like The Dressing Room and to diners as far away as Japan.  But what Troy is most proud of and passionate about is figuring out how to make time for fun and vacations with his wife, their daughters, and their families.  It’s all thanks to Grazing Charts and managing his work to make sure there’s plenty of room for life.
